It’s All In the Programming

September 30, 2010 by Mike

Sports facilities shouldn't rely on rentals. Use your fields for programs!

I’ve seen it time and time again; sports facilities relying strictly on their rentals to get by instead of maximizing what their space can do for them. This is a critical mistake that cuts so deeply into a business’ profitability that it’s nearly impossible to survive. For those who add programming to their sports facility operations, the math speaks for itself.

Programming can be camps, clinics, group lessons, leagues, or even tournaments. No matter what the program, you will have multiple people paying to use the same space. Let’s use the example of a field that rents for $100 per hour. You could rent that field for two hours and make $200, or you could run a two-hour camp on that field with twenty-five to fifty kids at $30.00 per entry and make $750-$1500. It’s easy to see which option will maximize your profitability!

Another lucrative perk to offering programming is that it introduces more potential clients to your facility. People participating in a clinic may decide that they really like the clinic instructor and sign up for private lessons with him or her, or maybe they will be so impressed by the facility that they will purchase a membership. You’re getting paid while you showcase what your facility has to offer.

In my own sports facility operations, I have experienced firsthand the benefits of programming. I am maximizing my profitability and drawing in new clients regularly. One of my favorite programs is One-Timers Soccer Clinic. In this camp, players learn to take a shot on goal no matter where the ball is approaching their bodies. The kids love it, the facility maximizes its earning potential of the field, and we grow our business through cross-selling opportunities. Another great programming option is instructional sports leagues. No matter the sport, a league ensures a lot of paying registrants as well as increased visibility for your facility.

If you are not making use of programming in your sports facility operations, I strongly encourage you to do so. Do the math; you can’t afford not to.
